The St. Paul’s Mission Catholic Church, often referred to as the “Gem” of Montana’s Little Rocky Mountains is a unique church of its own. The church boasts a special quality that can be found no where else. Built in 1931 under the direction of Father John Balfe, SJ on the St. Paul's Mission School Campus (1889 - Present), this National Treasure sits in the small community of Hays, on the southern end of the Fort Belknap Indian Reservation, home of the Assiniboine and Gros Ventre Tribes. Quarried from local lime stone, the church stands majestic in its feature of solid design.

However, years of wear and tear of harsh Montana weather has taken its toll on this  structure and have caused decrepit and somewhat dangerous structural concerns. “The elements are getting the best of her.” Father Joseph Retzel, S.J. has said. He has been devoted to the church for nearly forty plus years. It would be a pity for the 85 year old WWII veteran priest to see the church become just a memory. Often times, mass services are held elsewhere.

Fortunately, with the help of local generous patrons, the church has seen a slight significant renovation. Although amazingly restored in some parts, many parts are still in near shambles and are in desperate need of repair. The local resources have all but run out. With 80% unemployment within the Fort Belknap Indian Reservation, the St. Paul’s Mission Church is reaching out for any resources available to assist in continuing its cause. The recent renovation revealed small hidden secrets within the church's structure, statues, wall hangings and tapestry. Further restoration may reveal more. How exciting!

Donations of any denomination is welcome and graciously accepted and your contribution will be recognized as well as appreciated. Please help keep this traditional “Gem” alive for its purpose and its people.
